The Trump administration is recalling nearly 30 career diplomats from ambassadorial and senior embassy positions to align U.S. diplomatic representation with its 'America First' agenda. Officials informed the chiefs of mission in at least 29 countries last week that their tenures would conclude in January.
The majority of affected diplomats were appointed during the Biden administration and had remained in their roles after an initial wave of removals targeting political appointees. These diplomats will retain their positions within the Foreign Service and have the option to accept assignments in Washington.
A State Department official described the recall as 'a standard process in any administration,' emphasizing the president's prerogative to appoint ambassadors who advance his foreign policy agenda.
The recalls predominantly affect Africa, with ambassadors from 13 countries, including Burundi, Cameroon, and Nigeria, being removed. In Asia, six countries, such as the Philippines and Vietnam, are impacted. Additional changes are occurring in Europe, the Middle East, South and Central Asia, and the Western Hemisphere.
The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), representing U.S. diplomats, has expressed concern over the recalls, noting that such abrupt removals without cause could undermine U.S. credibility abroad and send a chilling signal to the professional Foreign Service.
