Power Restored to Most San Francisco Residents After Major Outage
A significant power outage affected approximately 130,000 homes and businesses in San Francisco, with most services restored by Sunday morning.
A significant power outage affected approximately 130,000 homes and businesses in San Francisco on Saturday, December 20, 2025. By Sunday morning, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) had restored electricity to about 110,000 customers and was working to restore power to the remaining 21,000.
The outage began shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, impacting a large portion of the city's northern neighborhoods, including Richmond, Presidio, and areas around Golden Gate Park.
PG&E attributed the blackout to a significant fire at its substation located at 8th and Mission streets. The utility stated, "The damage from the fire in our substation was significant and extensive, and the repairs and safe restoration will be complex."
The blackout led to widespread disruptions, including mass closures of restaurants and shops, darkened streetlights, and Christmas decorations during one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
