US Conducts Airstrikes in Syria Following Deadly Attack on American Personnel

Summary

The United States launched airstrikes targeting ISIS positions in Syria in response to an attack that killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter.

The United States military executed a series of airstrikes on Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Syria on December 19, 2025, following an attack that resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter. The operation, named "Operation Hawkeye Strike," was ordered by President Donald Trump and involved F-15 and A-10 jets, Apache helicopters, and HIMARS rocket systems. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the strikes were acts of "vengeance," not the beginning of a broader war.

The initial attack occurred on December 13 in Palmyra, Syria, where two U.S. Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed during an ambush by a suspected ISIS gunman. Three other U.S. soldiers were injured in the incident. The attacker, who had recently joined Syria's internal security forces and was under investigation for potential ISIS ties, was killed by partner forces during the skirmish.

The two soldiers killed were identified as Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa. Both were members of the Iowa National Guard. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in their honor.

The retaliatory airstrikes targeted ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapon sites across central Syria, including areas near Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and the Palmyra region. The Syrian government, under President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, supported the U.S. efforts against ISIS.

This incident marks the first U.S. military casualties in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. The U.S. continues to maintain a military presence in Syria, with approximately 1,000 troops stationed to support ongoing counterterrorism operations.
