AI Infrastructure Stocks Decline Amid Debt Concerns
Shares of AI infrastructure companies, including Oracle and Broadcom, have fallen due to investor concerns over rising debt levels and profitability challenges.
Shares of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure companies have declined as investors express concerns over increasing debt levels and profitability challenges. Oracle's stock fell 2.7% on Monday after the company announced an additional $15 billion in capital expenditures for the current fiscal year, primarily to expand its data centers. This expansion is being financed through debt, raising investor apprehension.
Similarly, Broadcom's shares dropped over 5% following warnings about margin compression due to a growing share of revenue from lower-margin custom AI processors.
Despite these declines, major stock indexes remained relatively stable. The S&P 500 slipped 0.16%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked down 0.09%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.59%. This suggests that concerns are primarily concentrated within the AI infrastructure sector.
Matt Witheiler, head of late-stage growth at Wellington Management, commented on the situation: "It definitely requires the ROI [return on investment] to be there to keep funding this AI investment. From what we've seen so far that ROI is there."
He added that every AI company is indicating that increased computing power leads to higher revenue, implying that providers like Oracle and CoreWeave need to ensure their financial strategies are sound to capitalize on this demand.
