Hong Kong Court to Deliver Verdict in Jimmy Lai's National Security Trial
Hong Kong's High Court is set to announce the verdict in the national security trial of media tycoon Jimmy Lai, who faces charges under the National Security Law.
Hong Kong's High Court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on Monday in the national security trial of Jimmy Lai, the 78-year-old founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily. Lai faces charges of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and conspiracy to publish seditious material under the National Security Law imposed by Beijing in 2020.
Arrested in August 2020, Lai has been in custody since December of that year. Prosecutors allege that he used his media platform to advocate for foreign sanctions against China and Hong Kong, citing his meetings with U.S. officials and critical articles as evidence. Lai has pleaded not guilty, asserting that his actions were exercises of free speech.
The trial, which began in December 2023 and spanned 156 days, has been closely monitored by international observers as a test of Hong Kong's judicial independence and press freedom. If convicted, Lai could face a life sentence. The verdict is expected to be announced at 10 a.m. local time on Monday.
