Geminid Meteor Shower to Illuminate Skies This Weekend

Summary

The annual Geminid meteor shower is set to peak on the night of December 13-14, 2025, offering skywatchers a dazzling display of up to 150 meteors per hour under optimal conditions.

The Geminid meteor shower, one of the most anticipated celestial events of the year, is expected to peak on the night of December 13 into the early hours of December 14, 2025. Under ideal conditions, observers could witness up to 150 meteors per hour.

Unlike most meteor showers that originate from comets, the Geminids are associated with the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. As Earth passes through the debris trail of this asteroid, particles enter the atmosphere, creating bright, often yellow-colored meteors.

For optimal viewing, it's recommended to find a dark location away from city lights. The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini, which rises in the mid-evening and reaches its highest point around 2 a.m. local time.

This year, the Moon will be in its waning crescent phase, approximately 28% illuminated, and will rise around 2:30 a.m. local time, providing dark skies for most of the night.

The Geminids are known for their bright and intensely colored meteors, often appearing white or yellowish.

Following the Geminids, the Ursid meteor shower is expected to peak on the night of December 21-22, offering a more modest display of around 10 meteors per hour.

Skywatchers are encouraged to dress warmly, bring a comfortable chair or blanket, and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for at least 30 minutes to fully enjoy the spectacle.
