Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Japan, Prompting Tsunami Advisory

Summary

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake off Japan's northeastern coast has led to tsunami advisories and evacuation notices, with authorities urging vigilance amid ongoing seismic activity.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan at 11:44 local time (02:44 GMT) on December 12, 2025, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and was followed by several aftershocks ranging from magnitudes 4.5 to 5.7.

In response, the JMA issued tsunami advisories for Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures, warning of possible waves up to one meter (3.3 feet). Waves measuring up to 20 centimeters have been recorded along the shores of these regions. Approximately 6,000 residents in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, have received evacuation notices.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that this earthquake does not fall under the megaquake advisory issued earlier in the week. However, she emphasized the importance of vigilance, advising residents to check evacuation routes and emergency supplies.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no immediate signs of abnormalities at nuclear facilities in the affected region.

This seismic event follows a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck the same area on December 8, 2025, which injured more than 50 people. Authorities had previously warned of the potential for stronger tremors and urged residents to remain on high alert for at least a week.

Japan's tsunami alert system comprises three levels: advisory, warning, and major warning. The current advisory is the lowest level, indicating expected waves up to one meter. Residents are advised to stay away from coastal areas and avoid entering the sea.

Japan is situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," making it prone to frequent seismic activity. Experts have warned of a 60-90% chance of a megaquake occurring along the Pacific coast within the next 30 years.
