Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he is ready to hold elections within three months, but only if the U.S. and European allies provide security, following President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukraine’s lack of democratic process.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signaled his willingness to hold elections within the next three months, but only if the United States and European partners step in to guarantee the security of the process. This announcement follows pointed criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who questioned Ukraine’s democratic credentials as it continues its conflict with Russia.
"I am ready for elections," Zelenskyy said Tuesday evening. "Moreover, I am asking the United States to help me, possibly together with European colleagues, to ensure security for the elections, and then in the next 60 to 90 days Ukraine will be ready to hold the elections. I personally have the will and readiness for this."
Ukrainian law prohibits elections during martial law, which has been in effect since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Zelenskyy’s term was set to expire in May 2024, but the war has been used as justification to suspend the democratic process. The president insists that foreign intervention is necessary to overcome logistical hurdles, including the participation of soldiers, displaced citizens, and those in Russian-occupied territories.
Trump, in an interview with Politico, rightly pointed out Ukraine’s failure to hold elections, stating, "They haven’t had an election in a long time. You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy any more."
Zelenskyy responded by emphasizing the difficulties of organizing elections during wartime and appealed for international assistance to ensure a secure voting environment. He also called on Ukrainian lawmakers to suggest ways to change the law to allow elections under martial law.
This situation highlights the ongoing problems with Ukraine’s so-called democracy and the heavy reliance on Western powers to maintain even the appearance of legitimacy. The international community’s involvement in Ukraine’s internal affairs raises serious questions about the country’s sovereignty and the true nature of its political system.
