Ukraine Plans Advanced Sea Drone Attacks to Counter Russian Navy

Ukraine's military intelligence agency is preparing for more sophisticated sea-drone attacks against Russian forces, following the success of its uncrewed fleet in restricting the movements of Russia's Black Sea navy. The commander of Group 13, a specialized maritime drone unit, noted that while high-profile strikes have decreased due to Russian adaptations, the drones continue to effectively limit Russian naval operations.

The unit operates two variants of the Magura sea drones: the smaller V5, used for ramming, and the larger V7, a weapons platform. Both are remotely controlled and have been credited with multiple strikes on Russian ships. In May, a Magura drone reportedly shot down a Russian fighter jet, marking a significant development in maritime warfare.

Looking ahead, Ukraine plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its drone operations. The commander explained that the next stage will involve deeper AI integration, utilizing operational data to improve targeting and reduce operator workload. This advancement aims to enable drones to independently search for targets, distinguish between civilian and military vessels, and make more autonomous decisions.

Additionally, Ukraine is seeking to expand co-production of drones with NATO countries. During a recent visit to Athens, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek officials announced plans for joint development of maritime uncrewed aerial vehicles, expanded training, and information-sharing on maritime threats.

Despite Russia's adjustments, the commander emphasized that Ukraine's sea-drone program remains effective, stating that the unit is working on multiple fronts to change the situation and create a turning point. He added that while dramatic strikes have become less frequent, the program continues to hold the enemy in check.
