Pentagon Reviews Release of Video from Controversial Caribbean Strike

Summary

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated the Pentagon is reviewing the release of video footage from a September 2 operation targeting an alleged drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean, amid scrutiny over a second strike that killed two survivors.

The Pentagon is currently reviewing the potential release of video footage from a September 2 operation that targeted an alleged drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, California, Hegseth stated, "We're reviewing the process, and we'll see. Whatever we were to decide to release, we'd have to be very responsible about reviewing that right now."

The operation resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals aboard the vessel. Subsequent reports revealed that a second missile strike was conducted, killing two survivors of the initial attack. The Washington Post reported that Hegseth had verbally ordered that everyone on the boat be taken out, quoting an anonymous source as saying, "The order was to kill everybody." Hegseth has vehemently denied issuing such an order, describing the reporting as "meant to create a cartoon of me and the decisions that we make."

The White House confirmed the second strike but denied that Hegseth ordered it. Hegseth stated that the decision was made by Navy Admiral Frank "Mitch" Bradley, head of Special Operations Command, who was leading the mission. He emphasized, "In this particular case, it was well within the authorities of Adm. Bradley."

Congressional lawmakers were shown video of the second strike in a closed-door session, raising ethical and legal concerns. Some legal experts have questioned whether the second strike may have constituted a war crime. The Trump administration has faced criticism for the series of attacks on alleged drug-running boats, which have resulted in at least 87 deaths across 22 vessel strikes. The administration has yet to provide evidence that the targeted vessels were trafficking drugs.

President Trump expressed support for releasing all footage of the September 2 strikes, stating, "I don't know what they have, but whatever they have we'll certainly release, no problem." However, Hegseth remained noncommittal, reiterating that the Pentagon is reviewing the matter. He also insisted that operations against alleged drug-trafficking boats and their "narco-terrorists" will continue.
