Drone Strikes in Sudan's South Kordofan Kill Dozens, Including Children

Summary

A series of drone attacks in Kalogi, South Kordofan, have resulted in significant civilian casualties, including many children, amid ongoing conflict between Sudan's military and the Rapid Support Forces.

A series of drone strikes in Kalogi, South Kordofan, have resulted in significant civilian casualties, including many children. The attacks occurred on Thursday, targeting a kindergarten and other civilian facilities. Initial reports from the Sudan Doctors' Network indicated at least 50 fatalities, including 33 children. However, local officials later reported the death toll had risen to 79, with 43 children among the deceased.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group engaged in conflict with Sudan's military since April 2023, have been accused of carrying out the strikes. The RSF has not issued a response to these allegations. The Sudanese military has also been accused of conducting drone attacks in other regions, including a recent strike near the Chad-Sudan border.

UNICEF Representative for Sudan, Sheldon Yett, condemned the attack, stating,

"Killing children in their school is a horrific violation of children's rights."

He urged all parties to cease such attacks and allow humanitarian assistance to reach those in need.

The conflict between the RSF and Sudanese military has led to widespread violence, resulting in over 40,000 deaths and the displacement of millions. The recent escalation in South Kordofan has intensified humanitarian concerns, with more than 41,000 people fleeing the region in the past month.
