Virginia Man Arrested for Planting Pipe Bombs Near DNC and RNC Headquarters in 2021

Summary

Brian J. Cole Jr., 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia, has been arrested and charged with planting pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021.

Federal authorities have arrested Brian J. Cole Jr., a 30-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, in connection with the placement of two pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021.

Cole has been charged with transporting an explosive device in interstate commerce with intent to kill, injure, or intimidate individuals, and with attempted malicious destruction by means of fire and explosive materials.

The arrest follows a nearly five-year investigation during which authorities analyzed surveillance footage, cell phone data, and financial records. Investigators linked Cole to the purchase of bomb-making materials and placed his vehicle near the scene using license plate readers.

During a four-hour interview with investigators, Cole reportedly confessed to planting the devices and expressed beliefs in conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 U.S. presidential election, as well as support for former President Donald Trump.

The pipe bombs, discovered on January 6, 2021, did not detonate but were deemed viable and could have been lethal. Their discovery added to the chaos during the Capitol riot, as law enforcement resources were diverted to address the threat.

Cole made his initial court appearance on December 5, 2025, where a judge ordered him to remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for December 15.

Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that the arrest resulted from a re-evaluation of existing evidence rather than new tips, stating, "Today's arrest happened because the Trump administration has made this case a priority."

The investigation into Cole's motives and any potential connections to the events of January 6, 2021, remains ongoing.
