Nvidia CEO Discusses AI Chip Export Controls with President Trump
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with President Donald Trump to discuss export controls on AI chips, expressing uncertainty about China's acceptance of the H200 model.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with President Donald Trump on Wednesday to discuss export controls on artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Following the meeting, Huang expressed uncertainty about China's willingness to accept Nvidia's H200 chips if U.S. restrictions were eased.
Addressing reporters at the U.S. Capitol, Huang stated that he and President Trump discussed export controls but declined to provide specifics.
The Trump administration is currently considering whether to permit the sale of Nvidia's H200 chips to China. Huang noted that it's unclear whether Chinese authorities would allow companies to purchase these chips, stating, "We don't know. We have no clue."
In a separate event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Huang downplayed concerns about large-scale smuggling of Nvidia's chips to prohibited destinations, citing the size, complexity, and cost of data center GPUs as significant barriers to such activity.
The discussions come amid ongoing debates in Congress regarding the sale of advanced AI chips to China, which is viewed as a national security issue. While some Republican senators found the discussions with Huang constructive, others expressed skepticism about Nvidia's interests.
