India Balances Relations Amid Putin's Visit and US Trade Negotiations
As Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi navigates strategic ties with both Russia and the United States, focusing on defense deals and trade negotiations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting India on December 4–5, 2025, for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit aims to review bilateral relations and discuss regional and global issues of mutual interest.
During the summit, discussions are expected to focus on India's potential procurement of additional S-400 air-defense squadrons and Sukhoi-57 fighter jets. The ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict will also be a key agenda item, with India reiterating its support for an early peaceful resolution.
Concurrently, India is negotiating a trade deal with the United States, aiming to finalize it by the end of 2025. Trade Secretary Rajesh Agrawal indicated that most issues have been resolved, with only a few remaining items potentially requiring political intervention.
The Indian rupee has recently fallen to a record low of 90.29 per U.S. dollar, down nearly 5% for the year. Foreign investors have withdrawn approximately $17 billion from Indian equities amid strained U.S.–India trade relations, particularly after a 50% U.S. tariff on Indian goods imposed by President Donald Trump.
Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, is aiming to enhance industrial imports from India and facilitate increased Indian labor migration to Russia. First Deputy CEO Alexander Vedyakhin stated the bank is collaborating with over 6,000 Indian companies to initiate trade with Russia, aligning with efforts to balance the heavily skewed $70 billion trade, which is dominated by India's energy imports from Russia.
India's diplomatic efforts reflect a strategic balancing act, maintaining longstanding ties with Russia while pursuing deeper economic and strategic relations with the United States.
