Survivors Recount Harrowing Escapes Amid Southeast Asia Floods

Summary

Survivors across Southeast Asia share their experiences of escaping deadly floods that have claimed over 1,100 lives in recent days.

In recent days, Southeast Asia has been devastated by severe flooding and landslides, resulting in over 1,100 fatalities across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia.

In Indonesia's Aceh province, 63-year-old Aminah Ali recounted how she and her son climbed onto their rooftop as floodwaters rose to three meters, submerging their village. "I saw many houses being swept away," she said. Her home is now ruined and filled with mud.

Busra Ishak, 60, from the same district, lost his house to the powerful currents. He survived by clinging to a coconut tree for over 12 hours. "There were hundreds of tons of logs [in the water], and even an elephant could be killed by the incredibly strong current," he said.

In Hat Yai, Thailand, one of the hardest-hit areas, Natchanun Insuwano and his parents were stranded in their flooded home. They had only one bottle of water to share over two days. "I looked in the sky to see if a helicopter or drone might drop some food," he said. Eventually, he managed to flag down a rescue boat to evacuate his unconscious mother.

Chutikan Panpit, 32, also from Hat Yai, was bitten by a Malayan pit viper while checking water levels on her terrace. Unable to reach a hospital for 32 hours due to the flooding, she described the pain as worse than childbirth. "I was scared of dying. My son just turned one. He just learned how to say 'mummy' a few days earlier," she said.

The monsoon season, combined with tropical cyclones, has led to unprecedented levels of flooding across the region. In Indonesia alone, at least 604 people have been killed, with 464 missing. Sri Lanka has reported 355 deaths, and Thailand 176. The disaster has displaced millions and caused extensive damage to infrastructure and homes.

Authorities continue to conduct rescue and recovery operations, but the scale of the disaster poses significant challenges. Survivors are left to rebuild their lives amid the devastation.
