Afghan National Charged in Fatal National Guard Shooting; U.S. Halts Afghan Immigration Processing
Following the fatal shooting of a National Guard member in Washington, D.C., the U.S. has suspended all Afghan immigration processing and is reviewing security protocols.
A 29-year-old Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, has been charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom near the White House. The incident also left Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe critically injured. Lakanwal, who entered the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome and was granted asylum in April 2025, previously served in a CIA-backed Afghan military unit. In response to the attack, the Trump administration has indefinitely suspended all immigration processing for Afghan nationals pending a comprehensive review of security and vetting protocols. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that authorities believe Lakanwal was radicalized after arriving in the U.S. Investigations into the motive behind the attack are ongoing.
