Michael Burry Criticizes Tesla's Valuation and Shareholder Dilution
Investor Michael Burry has labeled Tesla as 'ridiculously overvalued,' citing concerns over shareholder dilution and CEO Elon Musk's substantial compensation package.
Investor Michael Burry, renowned for his role in predicting the 2008 financial crisis, has criticized Tesla's valuation, describing it as "ridiculously overvalued." In his recent Substack newsletter, Burry highlighted concerns over the company's shareholder dilution, estimating an annual dilution rate of approximately 3.6% without any stock buybacks. He also pointed to CEO Elon Musk's compensation package, which could amount to $1 trillion over the next decade, as a factor that may further contribute to dilution.
Burry's critique extends to Tesla's stock performance, noting that the company's shares are trading at about 209 times forward earnings, significantly higher than its five-year average of 94 and the S&P 500's average of 22.
This is not Burry's first critique of Tesla. In 2021, he disclosed a substantial short position against the company, which he later exited.
Burry's recent comments are part of a broader skepticism he has expressed toward the current artificial intelligence boom, where he has also criticized companies like Nvidia and Palantir for their valuation and accounting practices.
