Luigi Mangione Seeks to Suppress Evidence in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case
Luigi Mangione's defense attorneys are requesting the court to exclude evidence obtained during his arrest, including a 3-D printed gun and journal entries, in the case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder.
Luigi Mangione, 27, appeared in a Manhattan court on Monday for pretrial hearings concerning the admissibility of evidence in the murder case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel in December 2024. He has pleaded not guilty to charges including second-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses.
The defense is seeking to suppress evidence obtained during Mangione's arrest at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the incident. Items in question include a 3-D printed gun, a silencer, electronic devices, and journal entries that allegedly implicate him in the killing. Defense attorneys argue that the search of Mangione's backpack was conducted without a warrant and that he was questioned by police before being informed of his legal rights.
Prosecutors contend that the search was justified due to safety concerns and that Mangione voluntarily provided the alias "Mark Rosario," which he had previously used to check into a Manhattan hostel. They oppose the motion to suppress the evidence, maintaining that the procedures followed during the arrest were lawful.
Judge Gregory Carro, who previously dismissed two terrorism-related charges against Mangione due to insufficient evidence, is presiding over the hearings. The proceedings are expected to last several days and will include testimony from law enforcement officers involved in Mangione's arrest.
Mangione also faces federal charges in connection with Thompson's death, where prosecutors have indicated they may seek the death penalty. Trial dates for both the state and federal cases have yet to be scheduled.
