U.S. and Ukrainian Officials Meet in Florida Amid Leadership Changes and Peace Negotiations
U.S. and Ukrainian officials convene in Florida to advance peace talks, following the resignation of Ukraine's chief negotiator amid a corruption probe.
Top officials from the United States and Ukraine are meeting in Florida to advance peace negotiations aimed at ending Russia's war in Ukraine. The U.S. delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. The Ukrainian delegation is led by Andrii Hnatov, Andrii Sybiha, and Rustem Umerov, following the recent resignation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff, Andrii Yermak. Yermak stepped down after his residence was searched by anti-corruption investigators in connection with a $100 million embezzlement scandal in the energy sector.
The discussions focus on revising a 28-point peace plan initially proposed by the U.S., which faced criticism for favoring Russian demands, including Ukraine ceding the Donbas region and limiting its military capabilities. President Donald Trump has since referred to the plan as a "concept" requiring further refinement.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of unity and focus during this critical period, stating, "To preserve our internal strength, there must be no reasons to be distracted at anything else except for defense of Ukraine."
The meetings in Florida precede planned discussions in Moscow between U.S. officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as efforts continue to broker a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
