Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Agencies Search Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak's Premises
Ukraine's anti-corruption authorities have conducted searches at the home and office of President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, as part of a major investigation into alleged corruption within the state nuclear power company, Energoatom.
Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) have conducted searches at the residence and office of Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelensky. These actions are part of an extensive investigation into alleged corruption involving the state nuclear power company, Energoatom.
Yermak confirmed the searches, stating, "The investigators are facing no obstacles. They have been given full access to the apartment, and my lawyers are on site, interacting with law enforcement officers. From my side, I have full cooperation."
The investigation centers on a purported $100 million kickback scheme within Energoatom, with allegations that contractors were required to pay bribes amounting to 10-15% of each contract's value. Businessman Timur Mindich, a former associate of President Zelensky, is alleged to have orchestrated the scheme and has reportedly fled the country.
This development has intensified political tensions in Ukraine, with some lawmakers calling for Yermak's dismissal to restore public trust. President Zelensky has not commented publicly on the matter, and Yermak has not been officially named as a suspect in the investigation.
The situation poses challenges for Ukraine's leadership as they navigate internal political unrest and seek to maintain international support amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
