Shark Attack at Crowdy Bay Claims Life of Woman, Injures Man
A woman has died and a man is seriously injured following a shark attack at Crowdy Bay National Park in New South Wales, Australia.
A woman in her 20s has died, and a man of similar age is seriously injured after a shark attack at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, New South Wales, Australia. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. local time on Thursday, when the pair, both international tourists, were swimming together. Despite efforts from bystanders, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The man sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. A bystander applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man's leg, an action that "potentially saved his life," according to NSW Ambulance Superintendent Joshua Smyth. Authorities have identified the shark involved as a large bull shark. In response, five SMART drumlines have been deployed at Kylies Beach to monitor and capture the shark. Nearby beaches have been closed for at least 24 hours, and drones are being used to survey the area for further shark activity. Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce expressed condolences, stating, "This is a terrible tragedy and our deepest condolences go to the families of the woman and man involved."
