Israeli Airstrikes Target Hezbollah Infrastructure in Southern Lebanon
The Israeli military conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure following a deadly drone attack earlier in the day.
The Israeli military launched airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Wednesday, targeting what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure. This action followed a drone strike earlier in the day that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, including students on a bus.
The airstrikes commenced over an hour after the Israeli military issued warnings to residents in several southern Lebanese villages, advising them to evacuate areas identified as Hezbollah facilities. The strikes were carried out in the villages of Shehour and Deir Kifa. As of now, there are no immediate reports of casualties from these airstrikes.
Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike targeted a car in the village of Tiri, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to eleven others, including students aboard a nearby bus, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry and state media. The state-run National News Agency reported that the school bus was passing near the targeted car at the time of the strike, leading to injuries among the bus driver and several students. The Israeli military later stated that the drone strike had eliminated a Hezbollah operative.
These developments occur amid escalating tensions between Israel and militant groups. On Tuesday night, an airstrike in the Ein el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon resulted in the deaths of 13 people, marking the deadliest Israeli attack since a ceasefire concluded the Israel-Hezbollah war a year ago. The Israeli military asserted that the strike targeted a Hamas training compound allegedly used to plan attacks against Israel. Hamas, however, denied this claim, stating that the site was a sports playground.
The Ein el-Hilweh camp, located on the outskirts of Sidon, is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. Following the recent airstrike, Lebanese authorities restricted journalist access to the area. At the scene, paramedics searched for human remains near a blood-stained wall, with several cars burned and debris scattered around.
In response to the ongoing hostilities, the United Nations has called for renewed diplomatic efforts to establish lasting peace in the region. The U.S. has also increased pressure on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, recently canceling a planned visit to Washington by Lebanese army commander Gen. Rudolph Haikal. A senior Lebanese army officer indicated that U.S. officials were displeased with an army statement blaming Israel for destabilizing Lebanon and obstructing Lebanese military deployment in the south.
The latest Israel-Hezbollah conflict began on October 8, 2023, following Hezbollah's rocket attacks into Israel in solidarity with Hamas. Israel responded with a widespread bombardment of Lebanon, leading to a 14-month war that concluded with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in November 2024. The conflict resulted in over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, and caused an estimated $11 billion in destruction, according to the World Bank. In Israel, 127 people died, including 80 soldiers.
