NASA to Release Images of Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS in Live Event

Summary

NASA will unveil images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS during a live event on November 19, 2025, at 3 p.m. EST, showcasing data collected by various missions.

NASA has announced a live event scheduled for 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, to share imagery of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS collected by several of the agency's missions. The event will take place at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and will be accessible via NASA+, the NASA app, the agency's website, YouTube channel, and Amazon Prime.

Comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered on July 1, 2025, by the NASA-funded ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) observatory, is the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system. The comet poses no threat to Earth, maintaining a distance of approximately 170 million miles, and passed within 19 million miles of Mars in early October.

The briefing will feature NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya, Nicky Fox, Associate Administrator of the Science Mission Directorate, Shawn Domagal-Goldman, Acting Director of the Astrophysics Division, and Tom Statler, Lead Scientist for Solar System Small Bodies.

NASA emphasized its unique capability to observe 3I/ATLAS throughout its passage, utilizing both spacecraft across the solar system and ground-based observatories.

The event aims to provide comprehensive insights into 3I/ATLAS, enhancing understanding of interstellar objects and their characteristics.
