Nigerian Authorities Intensify Search for Abducted Schoolgirls in Kebbi State
Security forces in Nigeria are conducting extensive operations to locate and rescue 25 schoolgirls abducted from a boarding school in Kebbi State.
Nigerian security forces have intensified efforts to locate 25 schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State. The attack occurred around 4 a.m. on Monday, when armed assailants stormed the school, exchanged gunfire with police, and kidnapped the students.
During the assault, the school's vice principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was killed, and another staff member sustained injuries. One of the abducted students managed to escape and return home safely.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. However, such incidents are often attributed to armed gangs in the region who engage in kidnappings for ransom.
In response, Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, directed troops to conduct "intelligence-driven operations and relentless day-and-night pursuit of the abductors." Additionally, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris visited the school and assured that efforts are underway to rescue the girls.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of school abductions in northern Nigeria, where over 1,500 students have been kidnapped since the 2014 Chibok abduction. Authorities continue to face challenges in ensuring the safety of students in the region.
