NATO scrambled fighter jets in Polish and Romanian airspace as Russia launched extensive missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, resulting in civilian casualties and power outages.
Romania's Defense Ministry reported that a Russian drone entered its airspace during the assault. In response, two Eurofighters from NATO's fleet and two Romanian F-16 fighter jets were deployed after detecting the drone crossing into the eastern Tulcea region.
Poland's operational command confirmed that Polish and Allied fighter jets were also launched to protect Polish airspace on Wednesday morning. Additionally, Rzeszow and Lublin airports in eastern Poland were temporarily closed to ensure freedom of operation for military aviation; they were later reopened.
The Russian offensive involved 470 drones and 48 missiles, primarily targeting western Ukraine near the borders of Romania and Poland. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that nine people were killed in Ternopil after residential buildings were struck. In Kharkiv, drone strikes damaged apartment buildings and ignited several cars, leaving dozens wounded. Many regions in Ukraine experienced power outages following strikes on the country's energy infrastructure.
This escalation follows Russia's claim of shooting down four U.S.-made ATACMS long-range missiles over Voronezh, approximately 200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The use of these missiles, approved under the Biden administration, has been viewed by Russia as a significant escalation.
In a related development, the U.S. State Department approved a potential $105 million sale to Ukraine to upgrade its Patriot air defense system. A Pentagon statement noted that the sale aims to enhance Ukraine's ability to meet current and future threats by equipping it to conduct self-defense and regional security missions with a more robust local sustainment capability.
Earlier this week, President Zelensky secured an agreement to purchase up to 100 French-made Rafale fighter jets, along with anti-air defenses and drones from France, during a visit to Paris.
NATO allies have increasingly scrambled fighter jets in recent months during Russian attacks on Ukraine or when stray Russian munitions, drones, and warplanes have approached or crossed their borders. In September, jets shot down multiple Russian drones that violated Polish airspace during an attack on neighboring Ukraine, marking the first time NATO fired shots since the start of the war in Ukraine.
