China Intensifies Economic Measures Against Japan Amid Taiwan Remarks
China has escalated economic actions against Japan following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments on Taiwan, including travel bans and event cancellations.
China has escalated economic measures against Japan in response to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks suggesting that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could be considered an "existential threat" to Japan, potentially prompting military intervention.
State-owned enterprises in China have instructed employees to cancel trips to Japan. An employee at a Zhejiang-based state-owned group received an official notification stating that "due to the tense relationship between China and Japan," the company would suspend processing of all personal travel applications to Japan.
Additionally, the annual Beijing-Tokyo Forum, a key platform for bilateral dialogue, has been postponed for the first time since its inception in 2005. The Chinese co-organizer cited Takaichi's remarks as undermining the atmosphere for normal exchanges between the two countries.
Chinese authorities have also advised citizens to avoid traveling to Japan, citing safety concerns. The Chinese embassy in Japan warned its citizens against traveling to the country, stating that recent Japanese leaders have made "blatantly provocative remarks regarding Taiwan, severely damaging the atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges."
In the entertainment sector, the release of Japanese films in China has been suspended. An internet platform tracking new releases indicated that two Japanese films, "Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers" and "Cells at Work!", scheduled for release in the next three weeks, have been postponed.
These developments mark a significant deterioration in China-Japan relations, reminiscent of tensions five years ago when former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe made similar remarks regarding Taiwan.
