Larry Summers Steps Back from Public Life Amid Epstein Email Revelations

Summary

Former Treasury Secretary and Harvard President Larry Summers announces a retreat from public engagements following the release of emails detailing his interactions with Jeffrey Epstein.

Former Treasury Secretary and Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers has announced his decision to step back from public life after the House Oversight Committee released emails detailing his interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein.

"I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused. I take full responsibility for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Mr. Epstein," Summers stated on Monday.

While maintaining his teaching responsibilities at Harvard, Summers will withdraw from other public commitments as part of his efforts to rebuild trust and repair relationships.

The released emails, spanning from 2013 to 2019, reveal that Summers sought Epstein's advice on various topics, including Harvard projects, politics, and personal matters. Notably, their correspondence continued long after Epstein's 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

In one exchange from March 2019, Summers discussed a personal matter with Epstein, who responded with advice, indicating a close relationship between the two.

Summers' wife, Elisa New, also engaged with Epstein regarding a project on American poetry, for which Epstein donated $110,000 in 2014.

Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized Summers' continued association with Epstein, stating that his actions demonstrate "monumentally bad judgment" and calling on Harvard to sever ties with him.

There is no public evidence suggesting Summers was involved in Epstein's criminal activities, and no survivors have alleged wrongdoing by him. However, the newly released emails suggest a closer bond between the two men than previously reported.
