Cleto Escobedo III, the longtime bandleader of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and childhood friend of host Jimmy Kimmel, has died at age 59. Kimmel announced the news on Tuesday, expressing profound grief over the loss of his friend and colleague.
Escobedo and Kimmel's friendship began in their childhood in Las Vegas, where they grew up across the street from each other. Their shared sense of humor and mutual admiration for David Letterman fostered a lifelong bond.
As a talented saxophonist, Escobedo toured with artists such as Paula Abdul and Marc Anthony. In 2003, when Kimmel launched his late-night talk show, he invited Escobedo to lead the house band, Cleto and the Cletones. The band also featured Escobedo's father, Cleto Escobedo Jr., making them a unique father-son duo in late-night television.
Kimmel paid tribute to Escobedo during Tuesday's show, recalling their childhood adventures and emphasizing the deep connection they shared. He described Escobedo as a phenomenal musician and a kind, humble person.
Escobedo is survived by his wife, Lori, their two children, and his parents. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
