Israeli Settlers Arrested Following Arson Attack in West Bank
Israeli settlers set fire to Palestinian property in the West Bank; four suspects arrested amid rising settler violence.
Israeli settlers launched an arson attack on Palestinian property in the West Bank on Tuesday, targeting factories and farmland between Nablus and Tulkarem. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) detained several suspects at the scene, who were subsequently transferred to the Israel Police. The police confirmed that four Israeli citizens were taken into custody for questioning.
Following the arrests, IDF troops were attacked by a group of settlers in a nearby industrial zone where some suspects had fled. A military vehicle was vandalized during the confrontation. The IDF condemned the violence, stating that it "strongly condemns all forms of violence that divert the attention of commanders and soldiers from their missions of defense and counterterrorism."
President Isaac Herzog addressed the incident, attributing it to "a handful of violent and dangerous individuals." He emphasized that "such violence against civilians and against IDF soldiers crosses a red line and I condemn it." Herzog called for decisive action from state authorities to eradicate such phenomena and to support the IDF and security forces.
The attack involved setting fire to a factory building and surrounding agricultural lands near the villages of Bayt Lid and Dayr Sharaf. Footage on social media showed large trucks engulfed in flames and significant damage to nearby buildings. Palestinian media reported that dozens of masked settlers participated in the attack, with some throwing rocks at local Bedouins, resulting in injuries.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported 264 settler attacks causing casualties or property damage in October, marking a significant increase in such incidents. This surge in violence coincides with the annual olive harvest season, during which settlers have frequently targeted Palestinian farmers and volunteers.
The IDF stated that it dispatched troops to the affected villages following reports of masked Israelis attacking Palestinians and setting fire to property. The military confirmed that four Palestinians were injured in the attack and that property damage occurred. The detained suspects were handed over to the police for further investigation.
The Israel Police, in collaboration with the Shin Bet security agency, are leading the investigation into the settler attack. The police confirmed that four Israeli suspects have been taken in for questioning.
This incident is part of a broader escalation in settler violence in the West Bank, which has been occurring on a near-daily basis in recent months. Human rights groups have accused Israeli authorities of inaction or complicity in addressing these attacks, leading to increased tensions in the region.
