Dallas Mavericks Dismiss GM Nico Harrison Following Luka Dončić Trade Fallout

Summary

The Dallas Mavericks have fired General Manager Nico Harrison, nine months after the controversial trade of Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Dallas Mavericks have parted ways with General Manager Nico Harrison, nine months after the contentious trade that sent star guard Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. The decision follows a 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, during which fans chanted "fire Nico," expressing ongoing dissatisfaction with the team's direction.

In February, Harrison orchestrated a trade that exchanged Dončić, along with forwards Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, for forward Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. The move was intended to bolster the Mavericks' defense, as Harrison stated, "I believe that defense wins championships." However, Davis has been plagued by injuries, missing 30 of 44 games since joining Dallas, contributing to the team's current 3-8 record.

Team governor Patrick Dumont addressed the situation in a letter to fans, acknowledging the team's underperformance:

"No one associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season. You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you. When the results don’t meet expectations, it’s my responsibility to act."

Dumont did not directly reference the Dončić trade but recognized the fans' frustration:

"I understand the profound impact these difficult last several months have had. Please know that I’m fully committed to the success of the Mavericks."

In the interim, assistant general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will serve as co-general managers. The organization has not yet announced plans for a permanent replacement.
