Michael Burry Places $1.1 Billion Bet Against Nvidia and Palantir Amid AI Market Concerns
Investor Michael Burry has initiated significant short positions against Nvidia and Palantir, totaling $1.1 billion, reflecting skepticism about current AI stock valuations.
Investor Michael Burry, renowned for predicting the 2008 financial crisis, has placed substantial bearish bets against artificial intelligence (AI) leaders Nvidia and Palantir Technologies. Through his hedge fund, Scion Asset Management, Burry disclosed put options valued at approximately $912 million against Palantir and $187 million against Nvidia in a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
Put options grant the holder the right to sell a stock at a predetermined price, typically profiting if the stock's value declines. Burry's positions suggest he anticipates a downturn in these companies' stock prices, possibly due to concerns over high valuations and the sustainability of the AI market's rapid growth.
The disclosure of these positions has impacted the stock market, with Palantir's shares dropping nearly 8% and Nvidia's shares declining by about 4% following the news.
In response, Palantir CEO Alex Karp criticized Burry's move, stating, "The two companies he’s shorting are the ones making all the money, which is super weird."
Nvidia recently achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first company to reach a $5 trillion market capitalization, driven by its dominance in AI hardware. This rapid ascent has led to discussions about potential overvaluation in the tech sector.
Burry's bearish stance on these AI giants has reignited debates about the sustainability of the current AI boom and whether the market is experiencing a bubble similar to previous tech cycles.
