Car Fleeing Police Crashes into Tampa Bar, Resulting in 4 Deaths and 11 Injuries
A high-speed police pursuit in Tampa's Ybor City district ended tragically when a fleeing vehicle crashed into a crowded bar, killing four and injuring eleven.
Early Saturday morning, a high-speed police pursuit in Tampa's Ybor City district resulted in a fatal crash that claimed four lives and injured eleven others. The incident began around 12:40 a.m. when a silver 2019 Toyota Camry was observed street racing on Hillsborough Avenue. An air patrol unit later spotted the vehicle driving recklessly on Interstate 275.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled. A precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver was unsuccessful, and officers disengaged the pursuit as the vehicle sped toward the historic Ybor City district. The driver lost control near Bradley's on 7th, a popular bar, striking multiple pedestrians.
Three victims died at the scene, and a fourth succumbed to injuries at a hospital. As of Saturday morning, one individual remained in critical condition, while eight others were listed as stable. Two victims with minor injuries declined treatment. All 15 victims are adults.
The driver, identified as 22-year-old Silas Sampson from Dade City, Florida, was arrested at the scene. He faces four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed condolences, stating,
"What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy; our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted."
Mayor Jane Castor also commented,
"Our entire city feels this loss. My thoughts are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and we are working to get answers."
The FHP is leading the ongoing investigation into the crash.
