President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed a criminal complaint following a public groping incident, emphasizing the need for nationwide legal reforms on sexual harassment.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed a criminal complaint after being groped by a man during a public walk near the presidential palace in Mexico City. The incident, captured on video and widely shared online, shows a man approaching Sheinbaum from behind, placing his arm around her shoulder, touching her hip and chest, and attempting to kiss her neck. A member of her security detail intervened to remove the man, who appeared to be intoxicated.
Addressing the media, Sheinbaum stated that she decided to press charges upon learning that the man had continued to harass other women in the area. She emphasized the broader implications of the incident, noting that if such an act could happen to the president, it raises concerns about the safety of all women in the country.
Sheinbaum called for a review of national legislation to ensure that sexual harassment is criminalized across all 32 states, highlighting that current laws vary by region. She also announced plans to launch a campaign aimed at raising awareness and preventing such behavior.
Despite the incident, Sheinbaum affirmed her commitment to maintaining close contact with the public and stated that she would not increase her security measures. She underscored the importance of addressing the issue through education and legal reforms rather than isolation.
The man, identified as Uriel Rivera Martínez, was arrested and is currently in custody. Authorities are investigating the incident further.
