A Romanian construction worker died after being trapped for several hours under rubble from the partially collapsed Torre dei Conti in central Rome. The incident occurred on Monday during restoration work on the 13th-century tower, located near the Colosseum.
The worker, identified as 66-year-old Octav Stroici, was conscious during the prolonged rescue operation but succumbed to his injuries shortly after being freed.
Another Romanian worker was rescued and is in stable condition, while one more remains critically injured.
The Torre dei Conti, built in the early 13th century, had been undergoing a €6.9 million restoration project when the collapse occurred.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences, stating, "I express deep sorrow and condolences, on behalf of myself and the government, for the tragic loss of Octay Stroici, the worker who was killed in the collapse of the Torre dei Conti in Rome."
