Belgian authorities are investigating a series of unauthorized drone flights over military installations, including the Kleine Brogel air base, raising concerns about potential espionage activities.
Defense Minister Theo Francken confirmed that drones were detected over the Kleine Brogel air base in northeast Belgium on Saturday and Sunday nights. The first phase involved "small drones to test the radio frequencies" of Belgian security services, followed by "big drones to destabilize the area and people," Francken told public broadcaster RTBF.
Francken described the incidents as resembling a spy operation but refrained from speculating on the perpetrators. He ruled out the possibility of a prank, noting the technical sophistication of the operators in evading radio jammers.
The defense minister expressed frustration at the legal and logistical limitations preventing the military from shooting down drones in civilian areas and criticized Belgium's delayed investment in drone-specific air defense systems.
These incidents follow similar drone sightings over other Belgian military bases, including Elsenborn and Marche-en-Famenne, in recent weeks.
The events are part of a broader pattern of mysterious drone activity across Europe, with recent cases reported in Germany and Denmark, and ongoing concerns about Russian airspace violations in the region.
