Cryptocurrency Market Declines as Bitcoin and Altcoins Experience Significant Losses
Major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, saw substantial declines, leading to over $1 billion in liquidated leveraged positions.
The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant downturn on Monday, with major digital assets recording notable losses. Bitcoin fell below $105,500, marking a 4% decrease over the past 24 hours and an 8% decline over the past week. Ethereum dropped below $3,600, down 7% in the last 24 hours and 14% over the week. Other prominent altcoins, such as Solana, BNB, Dogecoin, and Cardano, declined between 8% and 10%.
This market downturn led to the liquidation of over $1 billion in leveraged trading positions across all digital assets, according to data from CoinGlass.
Despite the current market volatility, some analysts maintain a bullish outlook. Tom Lee, co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of Fundstrat Global Advisors, stated on CNBC that he believes Bitcoin could still reach as high as $200,000 by year-end. He also projected that Ethereum could reach the $7,000 mark before 2026. Lee commented, "Right now fundamentals are leading prices in crypto, so eventually we consolidate and then we rally into year-end."
The broader financial markets also experienced fluctuations. Stocks opened sharply higher, driven by the continued AI boom and new multi-billion dollar deals announced on Monday. However, gains were pared by mid-morning, with the Nasdaq up just 0.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.5%.
Shares of major cryptocurrency firms declined amid the market sell-off. Circle fell 7%, Gemini dropped 6%, Coinbase declined 4%, Marathon Digital decreased by the same amount, and both Strategy and Robinhood slipped 3%.
