Four individuals have been charged in connection with the theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum, with the stolen items still unrecovered.
French authorities have charged four individuals in connection with the October 19 theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The stolen items, valued at approximately $102 million, remain unrecovered.
The suspects include a 34-year-old Algerian national and a 39-year-old man, both residents of Aubervilliers, a suburb north of Paris. The 34-year-old was apprehended at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight to Algeria; his DNA matched evidence found on a scooter used in the getaway. The 39-year-old was arrested at his home, with DNA linking him to the crime scene. Both have been charged with theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy.
Additionally, a 37-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman have been charged. The man faces charges of organized theft and criminal conspiracy, while the woman is accused of being an accomplice. Both deny involvement and are currently held in pre-trial detention.
The heist was executed in under eight minutes, with thieves using a freight lift to access the Apollo Gallery, where they stole eight pieces from the French crown jewels. The robbery has prompted scrutiny of the Louvre's security measures, revealing outdated equipment and protocols. In response, French Culture Minister Rachida Dati announced plans to implement anti-intrusion devices and road barriers around the museum within two months.
