UK Sends Aid and Plans Evacuation Flights for Britons in Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa

Summary

The UK has dispatched aid to Jamaica and is organizing evacuation flights for British nationals following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

A UK aid flight arrived in Jamaica early Saturday, delivering over 3,000 emergency shelter kits as part of a £7.5 million regional emergency package. This assistance follows the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday as a Category 5 storm, resulting in at least 19 fatalities and widespread destruction.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that the UK's first chartered flight to repatriate British nationals is scheduled to depart from Jamaica late on Saturday. She emphasized the UK's commitment to supporting those affected, stating, "More information is now coming through on the scale of devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, with homes damaged, roads blocked, and lives lost."

The aid package includes a £1 million matching fund for public donations to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, with contributions from King Charles and Queen Camilla. The British Red Cross highlighted that the royal donation would assist the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in continuing its lifesaving work, which encompasses search and rescue operations, as well as providing access to healthcare, safe shelter, and clean water.

Despite the arrival of aid, distribution efforts have been hampered by fallen trees and landslides. As of Saturday morning, 72% of Jamaica's population remained without electricity, and approximately 6,000 individuals were in emergency shelters. The hurricane's impact has been severe, with entire communities marooned and areas flattened, according to Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon.

The UK initially allocated £2.5 million for immediate financial support, with an additional £5 million announced on Friday. Cooper noted that this increase was in response to the emerging details of the hurricane's devastation. The British Red Cross underscored the importance of the royal donation in supporting ongoing relief efforts, including search and rescue missions and ensuring access to essential services for those affected.

The situation in Jamaica remains critical, with significant challenges in restoring power and providing basic necessities to the affected population. The international community continues to mobilize resources to assist in the recovery and rebuilding efforts.
