Elderly Cruise Passenger Dies After Being Left Behind on Australian Island
An 80-year-old woman was found dead on Lizard Island after her cruise ship departed without her, prompting investigations into the incident.
An 80-year-old Australian woman was found dead on Lizard Island, part of the Great Barrier Reef, after being inadvertently left behind by her cruise ship. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was a passenger on the Coral Adventurer, operated by Coral Expeditions. She had joined a group hike to the island's highest point, Cook's Look, but reportedly separated from the group to rest and did not return to the ship. The Coral Adventurer departed the island around sunset on Saturday, October 25, without realizing she was missing. The crew became aware of her absence later that night and reported it to authorities at approximately 9 p.m. A search operation was initiated, and her body was discovered on Sunday morning. Queensland Police described her death as "sudden and non-suspicious." The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including why the passenger was not accounted for during boarding. AMSA plans to interview the ship's crew upon its arrival in Darwin. Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield expressed condolences, stating, "We have expressed our heartfelt condolences to the Rees family and remain deeply sorry that this has occurred." He added that the company is fully cooperating with official investigations. The incident has raised questions about passenger safety protocols and accountability measures within the cruise industry.
