Cruise Passenger Dies After Being Left Behind on Lizard Island
An 80-year-old woman was found deceased on Lizard Island after her cruise ship departed without her, prompting investigations into the incident.
An 80-year-old woman was found deceased on Lizard Island, Queensland, after being left behind by her cruise ship, the Coral Adventurer. The incident occurred during the vessel's first stop on a 60-day circumnavigation of Australia.
The woman had joined a group hike to Cook's Look, the island's highest peak. She separated from the group to rest and did not return to the ship before its departure between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time on Saturday. Her absence was noted later that evening, and a search was initiated. Her body was discovered the following morning.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is investigating the incident and plans to meet with the ship's crew upon its arrival in Darwin. A spokesperson for AMSA stated that the authority "takes the safety of passengers and crew onboard commercial vessels seriously."
Mark Fifield, CEO of Coral Expeditions, expressed condolences to the woman's family and confirmed the company's cooperation with authorities. "While investigations into the incident are continuing, we are deeply sorry that this has occurred and are offering our full support to the woman's family," he said.
Queensland Police are treating the death as "sudden and non-suspicious," and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
The Coral Adventurer accommodates up to 120 guests with a crew of 46 and is designed for accessing remote areas of Australia's coast. The cruise includes stops at various locations, offering activities such as hiking and snorkeling.
Cruise industry experts note that incidents like this are rare, as ships typically have systems to record passenger embarkation and disembarkation. Harriet Mallinson, cruise editor of travel website Sailawaze, commented that cruise lines have "clever tech in place to prevent such incidents from happening. This is most likely a shocking—and tragic—one-off."
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the woman's death and to assess the procedures followed by the cruise operator.
