Federal Reserve Faces Data Challenges Amid Government Shutdown
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell addresses the impact of the ongoing government shutdown on the central bank's operations and upcoming policy decisions.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell stated on Wednesday that the ongoing government shutdown has resulted in a lack of key economic data, making it uncertain how this will affect the central bank's December meeting. With crucial indicators missing, Powell emphasized the need for caution until a clearer economic picture emerges.
"If you're driving in the fog, you slow down," he remarked at the conclusion of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. The next policy meeting is scheduled for December 9–10.
Despite the incomplete data, Powell underscored the necessity for the Fed to continue its responsibilities.
"We're going to have to do our jobs one way or the other," he told reporters. "I hope by the time of the December meeting, we're getting a better flow of data."
He described the government shutdown, now in its fifth week, as a "temporary state of affairs."
"We're going to collect every scrap of data we can find, evaluate it, and think carefully about it. That's our job, and that's what we're going to do," Powell added.
The Fed announced its second interest rate cut of the year, signaling ongoing efforts to support the labor market even as inflation remains above its target. Powell noted that, although official employment data for September are delayed, available evidence suggests that both layoffs and hiring remain low, and that both households' perceptions of job availability and firms' perceptions of hiring difficulty continue to decline.
"We're not going to have the same detailed feel for the economy," he said. "But if there were a significant or material change, I think we'd pick that up."
The Federal Reserve's actions come amid a complex economic landscape, with the government shutdown adding layers of uncertainty to policy decisions.
