President Trump Foresees Imminent U.S.-China Trade Agreement Amid Asia Tour
During his Asia tour, President Trump anticipates finalizing a trade deal with China before returning to Washington.
President Donald Trump, currently on an official visit to Japan, expressed optimism about concluding a trade agreement with China before the end of his Asia tour. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Tokyo, Trump stated, "I think we're going to come away with a deal," highlighting his respect for Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In Tokyo, Trump met with Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace, engaging in a brief meeting described by the White House as a "courtesy call." The visit also includes discussions with Japan's newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing trade tensions.
Prior to Japan, Trump attended the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where preliminary trade agreements were reached with several Southeast Asian nations, including Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
The anticipated meeting between Trump and Xi is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea. This meeting aims to finalize the trade agreement between the world's two largest economies.
Additionally, Trump indicated a willingness to extend his Asia trip to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stating, "If he wants to meet, I'll be in South Korea." However, there has been no response from North Korea regarding this proposal.
On domestic political matters, Trump dismissed the possibility of running for vice president as a pathway back to the presidency, remarking, "I think it's too cute. Yeah, I would rule that out because it's too cute." He also praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance as potential future Republican candidates, suggesting that a joint ticket between them would be "unstoppable."
The Asia tour underscores the administration's focus on trade and diplomatic relations in the region, with particular attention to resolving ongoing trade disputes and exploring new avenues for cooperation.
