Federal Immigration Raids Intensify Across Chicago Neighborhoods
Federal agents conducted multiple immigration enforcement actions in Chicago's North and Near West sides, leading to arrests and community unrest.
Federal immigration agents conducted a series of enforcement actions across Chicago's North, Northwest, and Near West sides on Friday, resulting in multiple arrests and heightened community tensions. These operations are part of the ongoing "Operation Midway Blitz" deportation campaign initiated by the Trump administration.
In West Town, agents approached a man seated in his vehicle outside the Erie Family Health Center, where his partner, eight months pregnant, was attending an appointment. Witnesses reported that agents broke the car window and detained the man. Autumn Brown, a resident overlooking the scene, described the incident as "terrifying" and expressed concern for the children at the daycare within the health center.
Approximately four miles north in Lake View, federal agents targeted a residence on the 3300 block of North Lakewood Avenue. Four construction workers were on the front porch when agents arrived. Two workers were detained, while the others sought refuge inside. Neighbors gathered and confronted the agents, demanding to see a warrant. In response, agents deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. Alderman Bennett Lawson (44th) criticized the use of tear gas, stating that residents were exercising their First Amendment rights and that the deployment occurred "without warning."
These operations are part of the broader "Operation Midway Blitz," which has seen increased federal immigration enforcement activities in Chicago. The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have not provided immediate comments on these specific incidents.
