Summary

A 21-year-old truck driver faces charges after a deadly crash on Interstate 10 in Ontario, California, with officials alleging drug impairment and unlawful U.S. entry.

A 21-year-old truck driver has been arrested following a fatal multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 10 in Ontario, California. Authorities allege the driver was under the influence of drugs and in the United States unlawfully.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver, identified as Jashanpreet Singh of Yuba City, was operating a Freightliner semi-truck on Tuesday afternoon when he failed to stop for slowed traffic, resulting in a chain-reaction crash involving eight vehicles, including four commercial trucks. The incident led to three fatalities and at least four injuries.

Dash camera footage reviewed by investigators showed the semi-truck colliding with multiple vehicles before veering off the road and striking additional vehicles on the shoulder. Singh was arrested at the scene and booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs causing bodily injury. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Singh entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico in 2022 and that an immigration detainer has been placed on him. DHS commented on the incident, stating, "This tragedy follows a disturbing pattern of criminal illegal aliens driving commercial vehicles on American roads, directly threatening public safety."

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed the incident, emphasizing recent policy changes: "This is exactly why I set new restrictions that prohibit illegal immigrants from operating trucks." Duffy has also announced plans to withhold $40 million in federal funding from California for failing to enforce English language requirements for commercial drivers.

The CHP is continuing its investigation into the crash, including verifying whether Singh possessed a valid commercial driver's license at the time of the incident.
