New York Attorney General Launches Portal for Reporting Federal Immigration Actions
Following a recent ICE raid in Manhattan's Chinatown, Attorney General Letitia James has introduced a portal for New Yorkers to submit footage of federal immigration enforcement activities.
In response to a recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Manhattan's Chinatown, New York State Attorney General Letitia James has introduced the "Federal Action Reporting Portal." This platform invites residents to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement activities across the state.
"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear or intimidation," James stated, urging those who documented the recent ICE activity to share their footage with her office. She emphasized the commitment to reviewing these reports and assessing any violations of law.
The portal allows users to upload images and videos, provide location details, and requires acknowledgment that the Attorney General's office may use the submitted materials in public documents, legal proceedings, or public statements.
The recent ICE operation in Chinatown involved over 50 federal agents targeting street vendors suspected of selling counterfeit goods. The raid led to multiple detentions and sparked significant public outcry. Videos from the scene depict agents detaining individuals and confronting onlookers. An armored military vehicle was also observed during the operation.
The incident drew condemnation from local officials. Council Member Christopher Marte described the operation as "a horrifying display of federal overreach," criticizing the presence of military-style vehicles and masked agents in the heart of Chinatown. He emphasized that such escalations are unnecessary and contradict the city's values as a sanctuary for all people.
Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, also condemned the raid, stating that it had nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities. He highlighted the need for reinforcing sanctuary policies and passing the New York for All Act to prevent local police from collaborating in federal enforcement tactics.
The ICE operation and subsequent public response have intensified the ongoing debate over federal immigration enforcement practices and their impact on local communities.
