Vice President Vance Affirms U.S.-Israel Partnership Amid Gaza Ceasefire Efforts
Vice President JD Vance emphasizes the collaborative U.S.-Israel relationship during his visit to Jerusalem, focusing on monitoring the Gaza ceasefire without undermining Israel's sovereignty.
Vice President JD Vance, during his visit to Jerusalem, underscored the collaborative nature of the U.S.-Israel relationship, emphasizing that recent high-level American visits aim to support the Gaza ceasefire without compromising Israel's sovereignty. "We don't want a vassal state, and that's not what Israel is," Vance stated. "We want a partnership."
Vance's trip follows President Donald Trump's recent visit and precedes Secretary of State Marco Rubio's scheduled arrival. These visits are part of U.S. efforts to ensure the ceasefire holds, following a truce agreement between Israel and Hamas earlier this month. The ceasefire has faced challenges, including a recent explosion in Rafah that killed two Israeli soldiers, attributed to Hamas, and subsequent Israeli airstrikes resulting in Palestinian casualties.
The U.S. administration is also focusing on expanding the Abraham Accords, aiming to establish diplomatic ties between Israel and additional Arab nations. However, significant issues remain, such as persuading Hamas to disarm and determining the role of the Palestinian Authority in postwar Gaza. Vance acknowledged the complexities ahead, stating, "It's not going to be easy."
During his visit, Vance met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and hostages released from Gaza. He is expected to return to Washington on Thursday.
