Mahmoud Khalil's Legal Team Appeals to Prevent Future ICE Detentions
Attorneys for Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and legal U.S. resident, have filed appeals to prevent further detentions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Attorneys representing Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and legal U.S. resident, have filed appeals with the federal Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia. They seek to affirm a lower court's decision that led to Khalil's release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention and to prevent any future detentions or deportations.
Khalil was detained by ICE following his pro-Palestinian activism and spent over 100 days at the LaSalle detention center in Jena, Louisiana. In June, U.S. District Judge Michael E. Farbiarz ordered his release and blocked the Trump administration from deporting him on foreign policy grounds.
In September, an immigration judge in Louisiana ruled that Khalil should be deported to Syria or Algeria due to alleged omissions on his green card application. Khalil's legal team plans to appeal this decision, arguing that Judge Farbiarz's previous order prevents his removal.
Brett Max Kaufman, senior counsel at the ACLU's Center for Democracy and a member of Khalil's legal team, stated, "There is no world in which Mahmoud [Khalil] should be torn away from his family for a second time and sent back behind bars."
A federal judge recently lifted travel restrictions on Khalil, allowing him to speak at rallies across the U.S. while contesting the deportation case. He is now required to provide the government with two days' notice before traveling, a relaxation from previous limitations that confined his movements to specific states.
