Former Congressman George Santos has been released from prison after President Donald Trump commuted his seven-year sentence for fraud and identity theft. Santos, 37, had served less than three months of his term before the commutation was announced on Friday evening.
In a social media post, President Trump described Santos as "somewhat of a 'rogue,'" but noted that "there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison." He added, "George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"
Santos pleaded guilty in August 2024 to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, admitting to deceiving donors and misusing their funds for personal expenses. He also acknowledged stealing the identities of 11 individuals, including family members, to make unauthorized contributions to his campaign.
Following his release, Santos expressed remorse and a desire to move forward. "I understand people want to make this into 'He's getting away with it.' I'm not getting away with it," he said. "I don't want to focus on trying to rehash the past and want to take the experience and do good and move on with the future. Repentance is an understatement. I have been dealt a second chance."
The commutation has elicited mixed reactions. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had advocated for Santos' release, thanked the president, stating that Santos "was unfairly treated and put in solitary confinement, which is torture!!" Conversely, Representative Nick LaLota criticized the decision, emphasizing that Santos "stole millions, defrauded an election, and his crimes (for which he pled guilty) warrant more than a three-month sentence."
Santos was expelled from Congress in December 2023 after the House Ethics Committee concluded he had exploited his candidacy for personal financial gain.
