President Trump Commutes Former Congressman George Santos' Prison Sentence
President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former Representative George Santos, who was serving time for fraud and identity theft.
President Donald Trump announced on Friday the commutation of former Representative George Santos' prison sentence, ordering his immediate release. Santos, 37, had been serving a seven-year term for fraud and identity theft at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described Santos as "somewhat of a 'rogue,'" but noted that "there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison." He added that Santos had been "horribly mistreated" in prison, including extended periods in solitary confinement. Trump concluded, "Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"
Santos' attorney, Joseph Murray, confirmed that Santos was released around 11 p.m. on Friday and was met by his family outside the facility. Murray expressed gratitude, stating, "I am forever grateful to President Donald Trump."
Elected in 2022 to represent New York's 3rd Congressional District, Santos' tenure was marred by revelations that he had fabricated significant portions of his background, including his education and work history. In December 2023, the House of Representatives expelled him following a bipartisan Ethics Committee report that found substantial evidence of law violations.
In August 2024, Santos pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including wire fraud and identity theft, admitting to defrauding campaign donors and misusing funds for personal expenses. He began serving his sentence in July 2025.
The commutation has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle. Representative Nick LaLota (R-NY) stated that Santos' crimes "warrant more than a three-month sentence. He should devote the rest of his life to demonstrating remorse and making restitution to those he wronged."
Democratic National Committeeman Robert Zimmerman criticized the decision, saying, "For Donald Trump to erase the consequence of those crimes — simply because Santos votes Republican — should outrage each and every American who says they are for law and order."
