President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former Representative George Santos, who was serving over seven years for fraud and identity theft, ordering his immediate release.
Santos, 37, began his sentence in July 2025 after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He admitted to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of 11 individuals, including family members, to fund his campaign.
In a social media post, President Trump stated, "George Santos was somewhat of a 'rogue,' but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren't forced to serve seven years in prison." He added, "Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!"
Santos was expelled from Congress in December 2023, becoming only the sixth member in history to be ousted by colleagues. His expulsion followed revelations that he had fabricated much of his personal and professional history during his campaign.
While incarcerated, Santos penned an open letter to President Trump, published in The South Shore Press, pleading for clemency. He wrote, "Mr. President, I am not asking for sympathy. I am asking for fairness — for the chance to rebuild."
The commutation has elicited mixed reactions. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene supported the decision, previously calling Santos' sentence "excessive." Conversely, Representative Nick LaLota criticized the move, stating that Santos' crimes "warrant more than a three-month sentence."
